Author: Dr. Felipe P. P. Rodrigues

24-year-old male patient.

Chief complaint: Patient sought care due to esthetic dissatisfaction with his smile, specifically with the color and presence of white spots on the tooth structure.

Initial evaluation

After anamnesis, clinical and radiographic examination, the presence of fluorosis stains was verified, which affected the enamel and, in some places, the dentin also. The color of the teeth had a yellowish tone, which is a characteristic of an aged smile.

Treatment performed on microabrasion

Scraping and prophylaxis were carried out to adapt the oral environment and later, alginate molding to manufacture superior and inferior whitening plates and shade taking. The patient’s initial shade was A2 in incisors and A3 in canines, according to the Vita shade guide.

The whitening gel chosen for the treatment was Whiteness Perfect 16%. 3 syringes of the product were given and the patient was advised to use them 3 to 4 hours a day, for a period of 21 consecutive days.

During this period, the patient returned for follow-up appointments on the tenth and fifteenth days. No discomfort was reported regarding sensitivity or burning sensation in the gingival tissue.

The result of the treatment was excellent, there was a significant change in the shade of the teeth, which reached the Bl3, of the guide for whitened teeth. After whitening, the patient returned to the office to undergo the microabrasion procedure, in order to remove the superficial white spots of fluorosis. Whiteness RM was used in a single session, with the product being applied 15 times on the patient’s teeth.

The result achieved was in line with the expectations of the patient, who demonstrated great satisfaction with the new smile, without the need for any dental wear.
